As with nearly everyone else, the first thirteen years of her life made a formative impact on how she thinks, feels, and communicates. These years were spent on a farm in rural Virginia that gave her a closeness to nature and animals that has never diminished. There were no children ‘next door’, or anywhere near, to play with so her playmates and friends were the animals. Fascinated, her maternal grandmother encouraged her through to express this in an artistic fashion. She diligently applied herself to paper and modeling clay. It was on a family vacation that she first saw a potter actually making a pot on the potter’s wheel. She watched enthralled until she had to leave. This fascination drew her to any demonstration of pottery that she happened to run across. Her enthusiasm for wood carving that was unexpectedly discovered in a required woodworking class, and a delight in making the forms for casting jewelry, and her strong prior training in drawing gradually lead her toward the form that her pottery would take. She decided to combine as many of her artist expressions as she could into the media of pottery. She began to make the animal pots and alter them and carve them accordingly. This started out in a rather crude fashion and progressed as she learned how to balance the various parts of the pot to give the desired effect. She hopes to still grow in her craft and further perfect her work, but we are proud to present the vessels that you will find here. She feels a continual bond with the animals and with the Earth in all of her many expressions. When someone handles her work she wants them to feel the echo of this bond in their own heart.
